How to avoid the appearance of a gothic eyeliner to use?

Well, sort of strange question. I wear eyeliner for I noticed my eyes are small, misshapen. The thing is that it always apply a thick line (liquid on top, pencil below). The contrast between my pale skin dark eyeliner make me look like a Goth, which is not the look I'm going to do. How I can implement to prevent this? PS – Do not just think that to apply a thin line, please.
