Gothic Girls Clothing
What type of clothing should my characters wear in my novel?
It’s a fantasy book.
It takes place in 1478.
I tried looking up Victorian gothic clothing but there wasn’t much there. Renaissance is nice, but from what I’ve seen all the girls wear dresses and all the guys wear suits; not really enough variety for me.
I’m stumped; should I just make up what they wear without basing it on anything?
The Victorian-era did not take place in the 1400s, it took place in the mid 1800s-early 1900s.
Suits weren’t very common but what was common were peasant shirts or prince-like tops. Think Prince Phillip (Sleeping Beauty) or Prince Charming (Snow White), those are perfect examples of 1400s style shirts for men. Pants were just regular old-fashioned trousers not very specific in color or style. Dresses for women were long and poofed up and some examples are the dresses from The Other Boleyn Girl or medieval dresses from Camelot or Sleeping Beauty.
Please be historically accurate and not just make things up without knowing what people wore. You would want people to recognize your novel for being historically accurate and nicely written. Reach for the stars in your writing! ^^
